As I listen to this beautiful recording by the jim hall trio with carl perkins and red mitchell (thanks Mark Eiserman!) I realize the paradox I have as a listener;

When I hear today's players I find they are either copying this older style and almost completely missing the point (or the magic). Then when i listen to the hot young guitar player doing the modern thing i feel that they are missing the elements in this older style that could make their modern music much more beautiful. I find it a little confusing (and I am sure that this entry is not helping one bit)
