I had fun at Hugh's room tonight at Dave Wall's Cd launch. Very happy music and lots of great songs, beautiful harmony and I saw lots of friends and interesting folks. My seat was perfect as I was close to the St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout tap and could watch the hockey game and see and hear Dave onstage rockin it up!

The funny thing was that all I could think about was playing hockey tommorrow. I really can't wait to step on the ice. Not much could stop me from being on the ice at 11am....hurray....less than twelve hours.

Gretzky is innocent!!! (you read it here)

A frustrating night tonight (but no big deal) Not only did I miss my pal Rob Clutton's show at the Red Guitar but I finally got out of the house just before midnight and The Bad Plus were done too. rats!!

I guess a big part of relationships is compromise and tonight I was the first star in that game. The thing that bugs me (a little) is that Julie went to see a movie which could happen almost any night where as I wanted to see live, improvised music that will literally never happen again. (sigh.....)

I don't think I will open that can of worms.

good night,

I am having somewhat of an emotional start to the day having cried twice already and it is not even 10am. If you know me well, you know it doesn't take much for me, sometimes simply the happiness on an athletes face as they are presented with their gold medal.

Today it started with my sister Heather calling me to tell me a beautiful dream she had. She was with our mother, Isobel who passed away more than ten years ago of cancer, but Isobel was young like Heather. In the dream Heather was her age today and had her new baby but Isobel was pregnant with Heather. So beautiful, that I was a little jealous of Heath having such a great dream about our Mom. I am really glad she shared it with me.

Then Leonard Cohen got me with some talk of his old friend Irving Layton. If you want to spend 45 minutes in a highly rewarding way, check out Cohen on the CBC website.for Sounds Like Canada. It is a simple click for 45 minutes of beauty, inspiration and insight.

Have a great day!

Wednesday is look to be another exciting night for listening to music in this town. Across the street at Revival you can hear the restructuralist jazz piano trio; The Bad Plus.

I went to the Banff School of the arts with Ethan Iverson, the pianist. Unfortunately I haven't seen him since but I hope to be there. He was an interesting exciting pianist back then and I think he was abou 17 years old. I always remember really liking his energy and from reading their blog I think he still has a great sense of humour and a monstrous passion for jazz music.

The same night my pal Rob Clutton is playing with the new trio; The Sea Gone Off With The Sun at the Red Guitar.

This is trio makes lovely music. Beautifully understated, yet complex compositions by Rob as well as improvising in the bass, drum, violin format.

Check it out!!

I am just getting back from this show. It was fantastic. Way to go Andrew! What a film too. The set design was so minimal and so modern, especially for a film made in Germany in l919.

I have to confess that I am not the best person to talk about the film after one viewing as I was nodding off occasional. (long day...few too many last night...few too few hours of sleep and a long day of skating with the kids....zzzzzzzz)

Nice hang too. Great to see a bunch of friends out supporting another friend and his creative, large piece of work.

I am excited to check out some more silent films now too. I don't think i am too interested in trying to write music for them (never say never) I am interested in watching some more. (maybe some Buster Keaton with the kids!)

Here is all the info. (I wish I blogged it earlier so you knew about it in advance...though I am happy to say it was well attended)

It is basically about a somnambulist and a crazy doctor. (nuff said?)

ANDREW DOWNING AND MELODEON
play a live score to the silent film
THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI

Tonight, Sunday Feb 5 8pm
The Theatre Centre (1087 Queen West at Dovercourt)
$10/$15/$20

Andrew Downing - double bass
Matt Brubeck - cello
Kathleen Kajioka - violin
Kevin Turcotte - trumpet
Tania Gill - pump organ

I was very disapointed to find that there was no ice after walking to Trinity Bellwoods for my weekly outdoor shinny. (after calling to confirm it would be there today too)

There is a serious problem with mis-management regarding the city and it's rinks. Please come to this meeting on Tuesday at 7pm, Dufferin Grove park regarding this. (not sure still if I can attend)
