Here is a post I wish all those musicians from out of town would read:

Play at the Rex please!! What I mean by this is that the Rex has a location and a history where people stumble in there non-stop for a beer, food and maybe even to hear some music (and that is partly why it is such a fun place to hang out and play)

The Red Guitar on the other hand is a place with almost no walk-in audience (partly because it is nicely tucked away in Mervish Village) and people who come, come to listen to the music.

ie. "I am coming to town and we have this killer tenor player from New York". Who cares! If it is not Ellery Eskelin or Tony Malaby then forget it. (obviously I am exaggerating now but...)

The funny (sometimes sad) repercussions of this are that a lot of folks that live here cannot attract an audience either. (the worst are those with 905 area codes!...sorry but it's true)

Honestly, there are some people who do nothing but play at the Rex...and that is fine (obviously) but don't email me for a gig if you don't know how to put a little energy into getting people to a gig (ie. picking up the phone and calling a few people in addition to your email list)

Rant, over.

p.s. I Corry and I are more interested in booking people who hang out at the club too in order to try to develop somewhat of a small scene.

Nice to have some FM listening for my wednesday morning fix with ron gaskin on ckln.

I grabbed a couple links he mentioined on the show and thought I would share them with you:

heavy lifting looks like a freaky, political art based website.

and little did he know I was looking for a site just like this as I am researching the hand held computer market...not sure what his interest was in it but we seem somewhat telekenetically connected yet again.

I was so happy to open my mailbox yesterday and find a package from Rant.

Two great records; Sand Underfoot, the follow up to Jeannette Lambert's first record she made with Barre Phillips and Michel Lambert (which I highly recommend if only for it's completely unique mood and beautiful sound) and she has added Paul Bley on this one (good choice eh?!) This features more of her poetry and beautiful singing. Sometimes her voice and phrasing reminds me of Veda Hille, the great Vancouver singer songwriter. Le Passant is the new Michel Lambert Cd. It features Dominic Duval, Ellery Eskelin, Malcom Goldstein and an orchestra. This too is a beautiful sounding record.

I look forward to many more focused listening sessions (not an easy thing to find time for these days) in the near future on both these discs.

these guys are inspiring me to keep recording. I rarely question writing or playing but the idea of putting music into a format and distributing it again is making me wonder what and how and when.

I also came across a long list of Archie Shepp records on some obscure label recently that I had never heard of before and thought well...if he can make a ton of records that no one ever heard then so can I....

I just had fun watching the Junos on TV. It was a good show. Short, tight, funny, diverse, Pamela Anderson, Pamela Anderson, (I am seeing double?)

I still like (actually I am addicted to) the Canadian music industry. As I often say, it doesn't really have much to do with my creative, musical life (unfortunately) but I have always taken great interest, listened to the music, read the interviews and sum it all up watching friends and people I know and like win their awards play their songs etc.

The ending with Pam and Buck65 was easily worth the price of addmission!
