Seems these days I start out my blogging with an excuse why I have been away for a while. Today is no different; just thinking about the age my kids are at now.

When I had a toddler he would sit and play lego while I wrote a blog, or a new tune or a shopping list. Now that they are both at school full-time it seems like I have a million things to do in what I call a half-day. (I walk them to school at 8am and pick them up at 245pm)

The thing that bugs me now is how did I develop more things that have to get done in a day since then? For example, shouldn't I be able to enjoy and appreciate 6.5 hours of "open" time, organizing it to be creative, make money and take care of our family needs etc?

It always seems like it goes by in what feels like a couple hours. I am convinced it has to do with our societies need for more as we age. You know; the whole concept of getting a better job, bigger house, fancier car. I do not subscribe. As an artist and a musician; my career does not continue to grow. It even shrinks at times.

Okay, I am not sure how that supposed need or growth relates to my time exactly but just wanted to put that out there.

Tommorrow morning I have a very fun gig in the Storytelling festival. It has become an annual gig where Rob Clutton, Lina Allemano and myself perform as a trio called "Being Helen" with storyteller Jim Blake. This is upstairs in the art gallery at the St. Lawrence Market and it is free at llam.

I've got a theory about that missing extra time (same thing happened to me when both kids started "full-time" school... I thought there'd be more time available). My theory is that all those years while they were at home more I was actually accumulating tasks that never were accomplished. I have stuff on my "to-do" list that has been sitting there for years. Those things only ever made it to my list once the kids were both in school because I didn't even imagine the tasks were possible before that.

I'm in the same boat. I find that the problem is that there's just more time to procrastinate (my kids are at school right now, and I should be working... but alas I'm doing this instead).
